#29 wooden plane by The Goodall Co., Pittsburgh, PA ... no idea of a date,
useable with a little work, but likely not much more than a conversation
piece.
150 bf 4/4 black walnut, 8- 10' x 6- 8" - $1.05/bf ... all I could politely
store in a local relative of SWMBO's garage during a long weekend trip up to
Arkansas to register my youngest daughter in college.
Plane was a gift from said relative, and the walnut I found at a small mill
down the road from Arkadelphia just by asking around. There was plenty more
to be had.. When I haul the youngster up with her college "stuff" in a
couple of months, I will buy some more and justify utilizing the trailer
both ways.
Also saw the mother lode of kiln dried white oak (beaucoup FAS), but it was
all plain sawn, except for the accidental board. Must of been 20 acres of
10' high ricks, stacked side by side, all white oak. I was introduced to the
mill owner by the relative who had known him all his life ... was told I
could buy one board or a thousand, and pick and choose all I want.
Saw a lot of reasonably priced oak and walnut in Arkansas, at least compared
to big city prices here in Houston. Would be worth it for some wreckers
around the Houston, SE Texas area to make up a shopping trip with a couple
of trailers. I believe I've made some good contacts in that regard if anyone
is interested in a future trip.
Off to England Thursday AM to marry the oldest off ... gonna be a sea change
around the house come August. Just not making enough sawdust at the moment
to suit.

You neglected to announce the greatest gloat of all! You are marrying
the oldest off! As the father of a seventeen year-old, I can only hope
that either of us will last to see such a thing. Fortunately, I can
lock the shop from the inside.
Congrats.

HSU?
The white oak was down the road in Gurdon and should be easy to find. There
was also a big mill that deals in hardwood in Bierne (sp?), just a few miles
from there. I had a personal introduction In both above cases from a long
time local, but got the impression you might have to know someone to buy
direct..
The walnut? ... well, it was a one man, Woodmizer type operation and I'd
have to kill you if I told you, especially were it to be all gone when I go
back in August. :)

Nope, the diploma mill across the street :). Always figured it had to be if
they let me graduate after the dismal effort I put in. Fortunately, I have
some nice very old 4/4 walnut I inherated but always looking out for
inexpensive wood. Just got 230 bf of red oak at 1.00 bf but it's plain sawn
and air dried. Like to run across some quarter sawn white oak but don't know
anyone who might introduce me to the mill owners. But you never know and 'Have
Truck, Will Travel". Have a great time visiting next time and picking up your
loads of lumber. Regards, from a jealous Arky. Mike in Arkansas

Still ... the best campus food in town, from what I've been told. Apparently
all the "Reddies" want to eat there if they get a chance.

If I find that he doesn't mind me plastering his name/operation all over the
Internet, I'll let you know. But it might be August before I that find out,
so keep in touch hereabouts.
