I'm switching ISPs, from AOL. AOL has a great newsgroup reader-- you can mark
all entries read so that the next time you sign on,everything that comes up is
newly posted, With IE and Google, I can never tell what I've looked at and
what is new. I also can't directly access newsgroups via my ISP, they tell me
that they "don't support newsgroups". Is there some newsgroup reader or other
available freeware or shareware that lets you manage newsgroups efficiently?

No, it doesn't. Seriously.

No nipples in sight, but it did take me to the NY Strippers links. Not handy.

Probably an error in a shared server. The following link will get you
to the "gravity" pages:
http://gravity.tbates.org/
This is one reason why I NEVER EVER put customer web pages on the same physical
machine as an adult site. One little mis-type and you're feeding porn to kids
looking for Grandma's home page.
I prefer SLRN as a news reader:
http://slrn.sourceforge.net/
It has absolutely wonderful killfile abilities.

Takes me to the gravity page
http://lightning.prohosting.com/~tbates/
takes me to "Tom's Prohost Page"
and

404's.
Now, would someone PLEASE post the correct URL for the NY strippers?

Pre-X, I used all the Newswatcher variants (VA, YA, and MT). I switched
to Thoth at least a couple of years ago, and I enjoy it greatly. Much
the same user experience as Newswatcher, but with OS X.

And be quick on the "mark read" button.
Before reading anything, I scroll through the message list and
Alt-click to select everything I don't care to read. Then I "Mark read"
those selected articles, so that they'll be skipped as I read the
messages.
My personal path to wRECk tranquility involves almost never joining a
thread in progress. If it's got a Re: in front of it, I probably skip
it. If it's a new thread, I'll check the subject line, but also
probably skip it if it's not within my area of interest. That means
reading a couple of dozen messages a day, instead of hundreds.
I read probably 80% of JOAT's links, almost all of Tom Watson's
stories, and almost none of BAD's posts.

You can with Outlook Express. Free. You can change views as you desire to
show only unread, or all messages or a couple of other options.

That's the combination I use too. The server is almost never
down and it seems to get most articles. Most ISPs don't have a
very complete news feed even if they do offer one.
And Gravity isn't perfect, but it's about the best I've tried.
The newsreader in Netcape 4.?? would be my second choice.

There are a few freeware newsgroup readers that will make life easy. My
current preference is Gravity, it's free and you can get it at:
http://lightning.prohosting.com/~tbates/gravity/index.html
Since your new ISP doesn't support news you may need to subscribe to a
newsserver service. You can sign up for a free account on Free Berlin

Since I posted that one- Seriously. NO, it does not. The link **as

index.html also. Otherwise, you get a text page of New York Stripper

By going to the view drop down menu in OE, clicking on current views then
"hide read or blocked messages" and marking the whole news group as read
after reading what I wanted to, when I check the group again all I see are

That's the one I used before I discovered Agent. I know, I don't use

There is no better news reader for groups such as this one.
BTW the AOL news reader is just about the worst one on the planet.

Got Outlook or OE preinstalled ? I use OE and can select exactly what yer
looking for:
1. Each time, shows NEW msgs only (cause I selected "hide READ msgs" in
OE). These are the NEW ones since I last checked the NG. The old ones are
"read" because
2. Also selected "mark all (current) msgs read" so once I shut down a NG,
theyre "Read". Theyre all still there IF I want to go up and click "show
ALL msgs". I know a lot of folks dislike OE but it suits me fine

Not a knock against paid programs, but what does it do that the free version
of OE does not do?
I click on a group and it shows me the messages. I click on the individual
message or thread that I want to read. I read it. At that point, the
software has served its purpose.
I mark all ignored posts as read and they do not show again. Or I hit
cntrl/shift/a and all messages are marked "read" and don't show the next
time I come back unless I change the view. I click on reply to reply. I
just ignore the tedious flaming threads, porn, etc.
I just can not image that I'm missing anything, but never having used

find out. I have no particular feelings for or against MS so that is not a

Umm, you can do that with IE 6.0 also.

IIRC by default IE6.0 has new unread posts in BOLD. After being read the
font goes to NON BOLD.
With IE 6.0 you can also hide all read message fromshowing up when you load

Sure. Get a shell account from an ISP such as Panix.com ($10/mo,
includes web space, email account, news group access, other stuff) or
evne a free shell account easily found using Google and get a text mode
newsreader such as slrn (what I use), tin, or gnus. Newsreading speed
like you've never known before ;) Just a bit less pretty.
