oak storage

After work today, im headed over to collect my 'wood find', a old oak shed I
mentioned
in an eairler post. I will most likely have to stack it off behind the shop.
Just wondering if
id run into any problems keeping it under a tarp, or plastic of some
type?...
Im thinking mid-south humidity + plastic + wood, not a good combo...
Good time to build a lean2 off the shop....except i checked on 2x prices
yesterday.....8'
2x4s going for 5bucks apiece now....
Any other outside storage options?

Consider stacking it as you describe, sticker the boards, but keep the tarp elevated
a few inches with whatever and keep the end of the pile open so air can go through
there.

Top less important than bottom. You want to stack and sticker it on a
_flat_ surface. Easy enough to leave a little air between the stack and the
tarp, I do it all the time with green wood, and it doesn't mildew.

http://www.fpl.fs.fed.us/TMU/publications.htm has publications on stacking
and storing. What applies to green will work for old.

keep 'em up off of the ground, especially if you have damp soil or
subterranian termites where you live...

Put down some logs or 4X4s 3-4 ft apart.
Stack and sticker wood.
Put some stickers on top of pile and cover with roofing tin. Make sure to
overlap the tin so water runs off, not into the pile (if the pile is long
enough to need two pieces of tin lengthwise).
Weight the tin with some logs or cement blocks. It's incredible what the
wind can lift iin a storm! Four blocks on a short pile, six on a long pile,
or equivalent in six inch logs.

Condensation takes place under tarps and plastic and starts mold before you
know it.
