I suggest you try over at news:rec.crafts.woodturning . They have specialty
knowledge on the subject and can probably help you better than we can. For
what it's worth though, I am in Australia and have not found any good
Taiwanese lathes - they all seem too light and the tailstocks are poor
designs.
