My local Woodcraft had a "Hand Plane Tune-up Demonstration" today and
my wife and I attended. It started at 1pm, but we couldn't get there
until 1:30pm, so I figured we'd miss half.
We got there when the demonstrator (who seemed to be an awesomely
knowledgeable and skilled person) was flattening the sole of an old
plane that someone brought in. He worked and worked on it going through
a succession of wet/dry sandpaper grits on a granite flat, and he passed
it around the class for examination several times. He kept up a running
commentary about how flat, where it needed to be flat - and finally
declared it good enough and went on to the iron (blade). That got put
through the usual back, bevel, microbevel progression - with plenty of
explanation on sharpening jigs (he had two, but used the Veritas) and
use of waterstones. He was *very* particular about flattening his
waterstones using 150 grit sandpaper on the granite flat.
Then came the work on the chipbreaker, and finally the frog and some
work on reassembly and oiling.
Demonstration - adjustment the planing the edge of a cherry board.
Finally a demo on the use of a shooting board - using a Lie-Nielson
plane which seems to be the "Iron Miter Plane". (They have a 10% off
sale on Lie-Nielson planes this month - but that still is not a cheap
plane!)
The "demonstration" ended around 3:20pm! So we missed perhaps 20%.
I'm going to keep an eye out for other *free* demos that they have in
the future.

This sounds nearly identical to hand plane tune-up class I took from
woodcraft (cost was $20 or 25 USD), not too long ago. The only advantage to
taking it in a class setting is there are fewer people and you to ask more
questions. Also depending on your schedule weeknights might work better than
weekends.

Well, if the trade off is a warm night someplace, it may be worth it. There
are a few "activites" better than woodworking.

Now that would be fun. Do they know you there? Just lurk in the back and
see what they do, while having a perfectly tuned plane at the ready to demo.
If they screw up, they you just introduce yourself and give a real demo.

I think they all have them from what I read in the mailer. It was a nice
day to work in my own shop so that is where I was.
Ttomorrow when it is 14 degrees and too cold to go out there, I'd rather be
a at a demo. Shame they can't schedule them for days that are not good shop
day. --

When the Woodcraft flyer came I saw the notice for the hand plane tuneup
demonstration on the cover and was interested... but the date and time was
listed as "February 12 1 PM." Well, February 12th was Thursday, I had to
work and the store is 50 miles away, so I didn't give it another thought.
After seeing the messages on the wreck about the demonstration being today I
thought I had screwed up the date. I dug out the flyer and it does in fact
say the 12th... inside it says "Saturday February 12 @ 1PM." I guess they
should have put February 14th on the flyer and I should have followed up on
the listing to see what day it was really scheduled. ;-)

If I'm not mistaken, there was one at the Louisville, Ky. store too. I had
to work, so again I missed out. Seems like they have free demo's about once
a month.

Hey Ed,
Lucky you. I was all set to get a nice full day of shop time today. The
only hitch was SWMBO needed to get her hair cut @ 11:30. I figured, good
opportunity for me to be "thoughtful", so I took her car to the dealer (free
oil change for life deal), went to UPS and post office, and was back by 10.
I watched the kid as she got ready for her haircut, and I even folded 2
loads of laundry and started another.
She didn't get back until 5. Sigh. Said she had "errands" on the cell
phone, and all she came back with was one outfit - for the kid! THEN, she
insisted I make food for the baby and feed him (which I enjoy, so I thought
"I can still go out after that"). THEN, she announced it was bath time.
THEN she looked at me all pouty-faced and said "It's valentine's day, can't
you just spend some time with me for a change and watch a movie with me?".
Big sigh.
So, she's putting the little munchkin to sleep now and I'm supposed to pick
out a movie.
So much for the warm day in the shop.
Mike
p.s. she still managed to ask me why the high chair and wall shelves aren't
finished yet.

The first time I went into my local Woodcraft (Raleigh, NC) they asked
me if I wanted their newsletter - and I signed up. Every month I get a
slick 8 page newsletter with sales, classes (for pay) and demos (for
free.) I think that they send the same newsletter all over the US, but
the Classes page may be for this location only. This month (Feb) they
have a Wood Threading Demo next Sat (using the Beall Wood Threader with
a router). They also had or will have a Chip Carving Demo. I've never
taken a class there, and this is my first Demo, so I can't say if they
are all of this very high quality.
