Grizzly Order Arrived

Hi all,

Just thought I'd post some feedback about my recent Grizzly experience
for any that are interested. I live in a rural area outside of
Richmond, VA and opted to pick up my order at the freight terminal in
my pickup truck, luckily things fit ok. All items were present, but
there was quite a bit of damage on the boxes. "This end up", "Fragile"
and other warnings might as well have been written in Latin. Here is a
summary of the items and condition:

-1.5 HP shaper: This one was the worst of the bunch. Holes in the box,
corners missing, styrofoam packing exposed. Cabinet was not visible so
I hoped for the best. Upon unpacking, it was in good shape despite the
container. Spindle height handle was shattered though. Cabinet and
table surface had no damage.
-14" Drill press (floor model): This come in a long box that had no
visible damage to the carton. Once unpacked, I found that the pulley
cover (top) had been dented in. Table, pole and motor housing were not
damaged.
-1HP Dust collector: This came in a much smaller box than expected. No
damage to the box. Unpacked and assembled, no damage.
-Benchtop mortiser: This came in a box similiar in size to the dust
collector, but alot heavier! Well packed in heavier grade cardboard
than the others. No damage to this one.
-Belt/Disk Sander (floor model): This item had damage to the carton,
Styrafoam was visible, but again, the tool was not exposed. Unpacked
and assembled, no damage found.

I emailed Grizzly the damage report and part numbers and they were
very prompt in replying and sent replacements for the damaged parts.
So all in all I would have to say it was a positive experience. A
second order is arriving this weekend with a 1023 table say, a 17"
bandsaw and a jointer. I'll give a shipping update on that one too.
Hopefully this is helpful for any prospective Grizzly order
recipients.

-Todd

Someone in packaging and shipping once posted on this NG that if the
cardboard or Styrofoam is damaged, then the packing did it's job. Just
because the box is damaged doesn't mean the product is.

Don't know why I remember that, but I do.

DAMN, you're going all out with Grizzly, eh!

What are you going to use 2 floor drill presses for? Just curious.

Hey, they make a living for me! I've been in the protective packaging
industry for about 34 years. As pointed out earlier, that molded foam
packing is designed to protect the items from damage in handling or drops.
UPS certification is pretty stringent if the company want to comply.

OTOH, your statement is slightly incorrect. It is not the shipping
companies tossing the packages, it is their employees. It is you and I and
our neighbors that work for the trucking and parcel companies that would
rather toss a package than place it properly. It is the UPS guy that sorted
packages of pharmaceuticals in glass containers with his steel tipped work
shoes; and the warehouseman that stacked cartons like a pyramid and used
them as steps to reach the top that causes the problems. (these are true
stores that involved many thousands of $ in damages and weeks of
investigating to track down)

None the less, hope he doesn't have small kids, all those bears would
scare'em half to death.

UPS just paid me for a $4000 titanium bike that they lost. The
insurance payment was remarkably fast, I was impressed.

The last tracking activity was "Out for delivery". It sure was, just
not to my customer. <G>

Thanks for the report. My pet peeve is shipping damage. Some of
these shipping companies throw boxes around like they contain their
mother-in-law.

Had a similiar experience w/Grizzly OSSander.
Freight line dumped it over. Oil everywhere. Ended up refusing the
shipment and getting another one shipped. Turnaround was pretty quick from
Grizzly. Have always been please w/there customer service. They never
have failed to answer my questions or send any replacement parts.

Let us know how you like the 17 Band Saw. Have been thinking over upgrading
my Grizzly 14 to a bigger saw.

Not my boy. He loves to visit the "Grizzly Bear Store". Especially their
fish pond and suffed grizzlies. We go at least once a year.
