As far as I can tell, 100% of the spam is coming from google groups.
It would be great to set nfilter just to block all posts from that
domain, so I did a test. Instead of blocking all google groups
postings, I had Nfilter flag them. It appears that a significant
portion of the valid traffic for this group also comes through google
groups. So if I block all google traffic, I block most everything else
too.

So now I have a humongus kill filter that lists just about every brand
name imaginable. Seems to be working.

Just curious, does AOL have access to news groups same as Earthlink or
Verizon?

If so, is the set up straight forward?

Been asked to set up an AOL account.

Normally, I don't do AOL, but this time have no choice.

Really?? That is a surprise to me. It is really surprising since I am using
Earthlink.

The news group server that I am using is named nntp.earthlink.net. You are correct
that the header says Supernews and that implies that Earthlink has outsourced
its news group support to Supernews.

However I interpreted jo4hn's message as saying that he left earthlink because
he could no longer access news groups from Earthlink. Earthlink does provide
access to news groups.

BTW: I do have a complaint with Earthlink concerning news groups. I cannot access
news groups from Earthlink when I am on the road (thus when I am using some else's
ISP.) Earthlink's support basically said tough. They suggested that I use Google
groups. I have tried GG and it is terrible.

I can still get newsgroups thru earthlink.net using
(news.west.earthlink.net); however, can't get there with Thunderbird, must
use OE.

I'm looking for a dial-up solution using AOL for when I'm away.

Tough to compete with FREE.

Have access to an AOL freebie, so looking for a way to use it for news
groups when I'm at the AOL location.

Haven't checked them recently, but do they still have a 25 post per day

1 - get a news provider like Supernews that filters the worst of the
crap at the server.

2 - kill file EVERYTHING coming from Google Groups. You'll miss a
couple of good posters here, but it's worth it. Besides, if they're
that smart they shouldn't be posting from GG.

I use Supernews, even though I have news access with Shaw, my ISP at

That's why I subscribe directly to Supernews. I can access it from

Seems like most every news group has three or more threads bitching about
it, filters work people, use them, do it yourself, do not rely on your news
provider to do it for you.

An AOL dialup account, will probably be comparable in price to going to a
dedicated usenet provider, i.e. less than $10/month. Plus when using it
you will not be limited to dialup, if you stay at a hotel or a friends
place with DSL or cable you will still be able to use it.

I have DSL through one provider, going to my inlaws for Easter weekend, I'll
just plug my laptop into the network there (I set it up, mainly for when I
go there), they are on a Cable provider, and I don't notice the difference.
I use Easynews, but there are many choices.

Some providers will provide access for a certain amount of data. For
example, my news provider allows me to transfer 90 GB for $25. (This was
part of a promotion that may be over now.)

Astraweb is the provider. They do almost no filtering at all, so it's
all up to you. Not affiliated...just a customer and all that.

But you are using SuperNews for your NNTP posting.

I assume jo4hn means Earthlink stops maintaining their own NNTP
server, rather than block port 119.

See my post a few days ago in which I showed how to set up filters that drop
googlegroups posts in general, but allow Charlie Self's to come through.

In general:

* score:+100 message-id:googlegroups
* score:-100 from:[email protected]
* score:-100 from:[email protected]
* drop score:100

I use Thunderbird as my news reader and
I'm signed up with a free feed called
AIOE (http://aioe.org/). For the most
part I've been happy with it for the few
groups I need access to.

As a bonus, it seems to filter pretty
aggressively for spam, although that's a
mixed blessing. It also filters out a
couple of regular contributors in here,
but I normally can pick them up if
they're quoted by someone one else.

Seems like most every news group is getting bombed heavily. Most times it
runs in cycles but if it proves profitable, they may keep it up.
