Just got home from shopping, I got a Sears Crapsman model 152.217060
6 1/2" jointer. It looked like a solid enough piece of machinery on the sales
floor, heavy cast iron, beefy and ergonomic controls, big enough (I hope)
motor, and was on sale for 360 bucks. It's in the back of the van, in a box.
I'm afraid to take it out of the box. WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME
ITS OKAY TO TAKE IT OUT OF THE BOX ? Please??

I was at sears a couple weeks almost fell into that temptation it was
there I could have it in the shop that day,,I went to the wall bang
head against it came to senses went home and ordered the 1182Z from
grizzly got vit three days later,,,IMHO craftsman are not any better
power tools than harbor freight tools
is it this unit?

if so, it looks like a pretty generic Taiwanese jointer. should be
fine. set it up and check the tables for flat and true, and make sure
the blades can be adjusted properly. I set up a taiwanese delta very
much like that one which had an aluminum cutterhead with bad
machining. it wouldn't cut flat.
if the machine has any problems, take it right back.

Doesn't Sears still have a "satisfaction guarantee"?
In any event, the proof is in the pudding ... the only way you're going to
know if it works for your purpose is to use it. Judging from many tools
today, it is probably made in the same place in Taiwan/China as some of the
better known brands.
I'd say "go for it" ...

I buy a lot of Craftsman tools but then I'm not trying to make a
living with my tools. They are not the best on the market but you
don't go broke buying them. What I do like about Craftsman is that I
know what I'm getting. They have a good warrenty and they more than
meet my needs. Since I don't use them ALL THE TIME they last me a long
time. In the past 10 years I had a switch go out on a reciprocating
saw and Sears replaced it for free. That is the only problem I have
ever had with a tool I bought at Sears. I bought a router from HF and
it was a piece of crap. One of the little plastic knobs that sets a
stop broke the second time I used it and the handle for the plunger
hold-down seems like it will brake the next time I use it. It was
maybe $20.00 cheaper than a Sears router of similar power and size.
Never again will I buy from HF.

Only one way to tell! Try it and take it back if you don't like it.
I have never used craftsman, but I have a delta benchtop jointer and I am
unhappy with it. The beds are too short. In fact I just ordered the
Grizzly G0500 8" with 75" beds.

I'm sure sears will take it back even if you use once or twice over
the weekend. Last weekend I just bought the Craftsman 13 planer that
was priced down because someone returned after one day (Sears rental
plan?). It was listed at $439.00 new and they marked it down to $373.
There was an extra 10% off for a Christmas sale and I talked the guy
in to taking another 10% off because I had a Craftsman Club card (He
said he wasn't supossed to becasue it was already 10% for the day).
That took it down to $298. It was still in the box and still had the
add stickers on it. He said the repair shop put new knives on before
they put it back on the floor. I love it.

Typically Craftsman is less expensive than others and you get what you pay
for.
If Sears is convenient and you are satisfied with the price, then just use
the darn thing.

If it makes you feel better I seriously thought of buying one too. I
probably would have if they had been on sale at the time I bought my Jet. My
feelings are it is one of Sear's better tools!
