On that note - does anyone have an edge sander, and :
what do you think about it?
what do you use it for?
what tools does it replace? (joiner?)

I do. An Acme 2C to be exact.

The Acme? It's a fine machine. Much better than the Ritter
we had back in the mid-80's. "That" was a piece of doo-doo.

Sanding edges and ends. On occasion I can do faces but with
it being a 2C it only has a 2 1/4" wide belt. I've yet to
extend the tables and haven't taken advantage of the contact
drum for inside sanding. It would limit me to a 3" radius
so I use an oscillating spindle sander for that stuff.

It replaces the drudgery of hand sanding that leads to edges
and ends that are rounded over.
As for it replacing a jointer, well no, but I did once
create a disastrous little jig for sanding to a consistent
width (a semi-jointerous like thing). Just say, it's
something you can do but you'd need to think it ahead more
than I did at the time.
UA100, still looking for a smallish stroke sander...

I have the jet and used it quite a bit as a jointer for smaller pieces. works
ok but belts wear then the tent to round over.
I used it to remove glue to flatten one side I use it to shape round pieces.
