Don't worry Puff, all will be quiet here in a little while. This
NG has been under troll attack for about 4 months now, or so.
They're getting desperate and our regular troll isn't helping
matters. This is a very well behaved, generally, and mature
group. We'll out stamina the trolls shortly. Stick around. Sure
would be nice if the klownhammer was a wee bit more audible
though. %-)

Once upon a time I read the wreck for woodworking related info. That
was boring. Now I read it for the extensive cheap entertainment. I
don't understand those who try to stop these "pissing contests". Seems
kinda like asking that your favorite TV shows be canceled. Obviously
you truly enjoy reading these kinds of threads or you wouldn't have
read enough to be "so tired of this pissing contest" as you say above.
It is voluntary as you can skip past them easier than opening and
reading them. So I say to all just lean back and enjoy or change the
channel ;)

But obviously you are reading these threads for some reason ....and it
ain't the anticipated woodworking content. You must enjoy the OT
content or you would just pass on by.

Of course I can't see any other reason than the wrecks to watch cars
drive around in endless circles either ;) Heck, that's like saying you
watch Hocky for the sportsmanship on display :) (BTW I don't watch
auto racing or hockey (or train wrecks for that matter)- but I do
enjoy a good pissin' contest on the wreck).

I second what you're saying, Puff. However, some senior and very
well-respected members of the group have been under a sustained troll attack
and have the right to defend themselves in the forum in which they were
attacked. In the case of the last series of exchanges, the troll seems to
be a poster who has been purporting to be one of our own for the last 18
months or so - he claims to have had his identity hijacked on a number of
occasions by yet another troll. I can't figure out who is the troll and who
isn't, but since the aforementioned poster contributes little to the group
other than controversy and discord, I've filtered them both with complete
impartiality. A plague on both their houses.

As for the pissing contest, a cursory search of Google will allow you to
make up your own mind as to where the right of the matter lies.

If you still have problems, then it's a simple matter to kill-file those to
whom you take exception - see David Eisan's FAQ, which he posts regularly.
Most of the good guys fly under their own colours so it isn't hard. There
is at least one resident non-Wreck troll who keeps morphing his identity,
making it harder to plonk him, but he's a just a lightweight maggot - no,

I would if I could. I can only suggest ignoring a thread as soon
as it becomes personally offensive - Netscape does this with a
"K" keyboard shortcut - and resisting the urge to strike back.

Usenet /does/ require growing a thick skin (or pretending to have
a thick skin, which is what I do) and the self-discipline to
/not/ engage in knee-jerk reactions. Tolerance for, and
acceptance of, the fact that some (perhaps all) of us post
inappropriately from time to time would seem to be a worthwhile goal.

I haven't read a posting here yet that caused me to dislike the
poster - the rec is full of good people. I don't care much for
the porn spamming nor the posting of forged articles; but I
regard both as attempts by (possibly damaged/broken) individuals
to get the attention that they're not getting in their lives away
from their Internet connection.

We all know that (on usenet, at least) the best way to respond to
trolls is to leave them in limbo. If usenet doesn't provide what
they need, perhaps they'll seek satisfaction and/or more
meaningful help elsewhere.

When a thread takes a turn that I find offensive, I'll either
abandon it or mark it to be ignored. I've yet to killfile an
individual. My life's just too short to waste any of it on anger
(especially someone else's); and it seems to me that the world
has a lot of really /serious/ problems begging for the
application of all the energy that anger uses up.

Now - all that is just my view. Your perspective may be different
and how each of us reacts is something we each decide for
ourselves. FWIW, I'd rather learn (or teach) one new thing about
woodworking than win a hundred pissing matches.

Everybody's mileage varies on this one.

My 2¢ worth.

I gotta agree with every word you wrote. 'course I don't
like everyone here, but since I've only got 2 miscreants
plonked, that leaves me with plenty of reading material. :)
What a find truly interesting is that obvious
tongue-in-cheek posts such as "Jeremy" made are raising lots
of hackles.

In times past I used to be a "plonkin'" fool. The most
excitement came when I shared my list with the group. The
list got long really fast due to their piling-on mentality
and I got sick of reading their posts. I soon learned there
was little to be gained from ignoring all of it so I
unfiltered all but a handful. Then I ran with no filters.
Then the porn started and I got sick of reading the filthy
headers so it was "shields up". Then my pc's hard drive
died and a re-install of Netscape started me back at square
one. and now I run with just 2 miscreants in my list. that
feels about right for the time being.

this is way too much talk about plonking. sorry.

considering the number of posts to this group each day, its actually pretty
managable.

I know I am new to this NG but not to Usenet. I am so tired of this
pissing contest between different factions of this NG. Cant you fellows call
a truce or something ? Ignore each other ? Whatever it takes just please
drop it you are ruining a fine forum just to out do each other. Flame wars
are an apparent thriving cancer in all of Usenet but it does not have to be
this way. If everyone would just grow up and act their age then this forum
can return to a decent place to learn about wood working.

I don't disagree that train wrecks are always watched by the passers by. =
That however does not make me wish there were no train wrecks. Might =
surprise you but I don't watch auto racing for the wrecks either.

Not everyone has killfiled you; but too much of this stuff
becomes a boring waste of bandwidth that might be used more
constructively to help those with less experience.

Just a lurker here. It seems funny to me that the regulars here
(who think that they RUN this group), NEVER respond to a real
woodworking post. Unless it is from one of the 'in' crowd. I have
gotten a lot of information from other woodworkers. These people that
think that they run this group should consider using their knowledge to
help a newbie instead of wasting their time on off-topic rants and flame
wars. My advice to some of these
so-called rulers of this forum- GET A JOB AND A LIFE. Quit sucking off
of the government tit (and my paycheck). Find out what life is like out
in the real world. Get out from behind that keyboard and do something
productive. Help someone that needs it. Better yourself.
Just my nickels worth, I'm

Two cents worth, even with inflation.

OK I'll take that, as I'm not a regular poster here and it is just my
opinion. But I think I brought up some valid points. No responce?

About what? You attempted to insult a bunch of people you don't know with no
evidence and added to your mess by not naming anyone.

Do you know how to use Google? Try it and see who's posting what when.

I'll respond.
You are incorrect.
"Regulars and old-timers" have always answered my posts about woodworking -
some in great detail, some privately by email, some in public. In fact - as
I started "internetting" as a mail hub back in the very early days of
Fido-net, this is the best newsgroup, CONSISTENTLY, I have come across in 20
years.

my 2 cents worth...

Google may not reflect that.

The help available is considerable and generally provided freely. You may
find some consistency to the flame wars; if you go back a few years and
scroll forward you will find only one consistent element, enough said.

Who is it that works for the government here? Who are you talking to? Who is
unemployed? What do you base this on?

A little more research would show a number of people involved in habitat for
humanity and other charities such as Toys for Tots. As for bettering
themselves, that is why most of us are here - to improve knowledge and
skill.
