FWIW, there's a local furniture store called Dovetail Designs that
uses solid woods. They hand rub it w/ linseed oil. They said the mahogany
pieces on the floor were light because mahogany gets darker with
age, so all you have to do is rub linseed oil on it occasionally
to keep it happy.

The last time I finished a piece requiring this look I used the following
procedure (to the best of my recollection):
1 - Apply a non grain raising dark reddish brown dye and allow it to dry. I
used a mix of TransTint dyes.
2 - Seal the dye with shellac.
3 - Apply a grain filler. I believe I used Behlen's Pore-O-Pac filler and
sanded smooth.
4 - Sealed the filler with shellac.
5 - Applied toners to equalize and adjust the color to my liking. I used two
different color Behlen's "Master" toner aerosol rattle cans, Mahogany and Van
Dyke brown.
6 - Seal the toner with shellac.
7 - Sprayed a number of coats of nitrocellulose lacquer.
8 - Rubbed out the final finish.
The whole process was a bit of a pain to do.

At the risk of bringing out the "tree huggers" I always use potassium
dichromate in water 1:10 by weight. Wear gloves and dispose of any
excess properly.

It's usually called 'Red Mahogany' depending upon the brand.

As long as the check doesn't bounce, I could care less what color my
customers choose!
FWIW, Minwax "red oak" on Cherry doesn't look too bad.

I'm not hugging any tree you've doused in dichromates ! They're scary.
