CUSTOM SURFBOARD

http://www.geocities.com/~kleb/windsurfn/buildboard/ It does use some
wood, and there seems to be ample instruction to make one. Can't
understand tho, why people would want to go messing around in water that
has fish big enough, and willing, to take your leg off with one bite.

Of course, the RAW numbers need to be looked at a bit more critically,
such as the number of shark attacks per 10,000 surfers, compared to
the number of accidents per 10,000 car passengers/drivers

And maybe even compared the incidence of accidents per ManHOUR
exposure

If you cna't understand that, how do you manage to muster the courage to
drive a car?

US Stats for Shark attacks

Year Attacks Fatalities
2000 54 1
2001 54 3
2002 47 0

Approximately 40,000 people die in auto accidents each year (a figure that
has been generally declining for over 30 years)

So... your chances of dying in a car crash vs just being attacked by a
shark are 40,000 / 52 = 769 times greater.

US Stats for Shark attacks
Year =A0 Attacks Fatalities
2000 =A0 54 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 1
2001 =A0 54 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 3
2002 =A0 47 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 0
Approximately 40,000 people die in auto accidents each year (a figure
that has been generally declining for over 30 years)
So... your chances of dying in a car crash vs just being attacked by a
shark are 40,000 / 52 =3D 769 times greater.

Some thing I do, some things I choose not to do. I don't:
Swim in water with fish that can eat me, jump out of perfectly good
airplanes, ride roller coasters (about 9 people dies a year on them, but
that had nothing to do with me not riding them), bungee jump, try to
beat a train, scuba dive, hang glide - I don't ride airplanes anymore,
bet money I can't afford to lose.

I don't need "excitement" to enjoy life. Most of the things people
keep telling me I should try, are that type of stuff. I can get the
crap scared out of me by every day life, I don't need to go out and do
it on purpose, all I have to do is wait.

However, things like white water rafting, ride in a 200 MPH race
car, etc., I could enjoy.

I'd love to do that but I don't have the data available and I'm not that
interested in finding it. If you search for surfing you get more hits
about internet surfing than surfing. I don't think there is anyone out
there that is going to argue with a straight face that surfing is more
fatal than driving, is there?

I agree with you. I consider myself a great internet researcher,

uh, yeah. If you mean are there more fatalities from driving than
surfing, then no, nobody would argue that. However, if you mean more
hazardous and more likely to cause death, then yes, that should be
pretty easy to prove. Remember, shark deaths aren't the only surfing-
related deaths or accidents, there's also drowning as a result of
surfing. Comparing the number of fatalities per passenger-mile (or
driving hours to make the units equal) from autos compared to the number
of surfing related deaths to number of surfing hours seems very likely
to show that surfing is more dangerous in terms of exposure.

Bullsh!t. Surfing is by far the most pointless and dangerous activity
I can think of. Besides sharks, there are jellyfish, sting rays,
urchin-covered reefs, pollution, violent locals, dangerous rip
currents, hypothermia, surfer's ear (bony growths in the ear canal
that have to be drilled out), unspeakably offensive inhabitants of a
certain beach in La Jolla, etc. Not to mention the risk of losing
your job due to a decent swell hitting. So please, if you know of
anybody considering taking up surfing, please warn them of the
dangers. Their lives depend on it!

Well, we're having fun now. LMAO You really need to get out more.
As soon as I read that, one or two way more pointless and dangerous
activities immediately came to mine, and I'm sure I could come up with
more.

Some of you seem to think I said surfing is danerous. Wrong.
People constantly "interpret" what I say, until it comes out entirely
different than what I said. Personally, yeah, I think surfing can be
dangerous. So? I also think it would be fun. I really don't give a
rat's rosy red rectum about shark statistics, it boils down to that fact
that I simply choose not to put my precious body into water with a
triple death threat - that is: Get killed outright; get bitten, and
bleed to death before rescue; or get bitten, and drown before rescue. I
don't think surfing is particularly stupid, I don't think it's
particularly pointless. I would probably enjoy doing it. I just ain't
going into water with sharks in it.

Let the entertainment continue. LOL

Gee, apparently I need to put a bit less subtlety into my sarcasm. My
post was sort of like somebody posting that Jorgenson Cabinet Master
clamps suck just before the WoodCraft feeding frenzy so he could get
all the clamps he wanted. It's about keeping the numbers down.

It is hands down the funnest, most fulfilling activity I can think of.
It's also much more difficult than it looks and requires a serious
amount of committment to become even competent, let alone masterful
(sort of like fine woodworking). There are also nuances to
understanding the ocean that can take a lifetime to understand (sort
of like understanding wood).

The most dangerous and pointless activity? Nah, no way. I'd say bungee
jumping, cliff diving, free climbing, hang gliding, sky diving and casual
sex are all a lot more dangerous than surfing.
