First off i am in mid-state Washington State, near Moses Lake and i am
looking to make a bunch of furniture out of maple, problem is no one
around here carries it they can all special order it but that just
costs more. So what i would like is to find somehwere in the state
that i can buy 200 Board feet plus or minus of S2S or S4S maple. Does
anyone have any suggestions? Also about 2 years ago my granfther fell
a huge black walnut tree the trunk is a good 4-5 feet across and a
good 10+ feet long along with som smaller good sized limbs crotch
pieces etc. None have been cunt the ends have all been sealed with wax
but it all just lying there. NOw that im getting more into wood
working again i would love to find someone i could take it to to get
it cut so i could mak esome furniture out of it. Does any one know of
somewhere that would do it? either in washington, northern oregon or
idaho? Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hardwood Components in Mehama Oregon (Santiam Pass) has by far the best
selection of locally milled hardwoods at good prices. It would take you a
long day to get there and back from Moses Lake. Also there are hardwood
millers in the Longview area, and at least one that buys/saws nothing but
fiddle-back maple for musical instrument grades. Call any hardwood mill in
Longview and they can probably direct you - good luck!

Mike, there was a place in Walla Walla called Jackson Sanders
Hardwoods. I don't know if they're still there or not.

Where ARE those Iraqi WMDs?
And across the street from Crosscut Hardwoods is another hardwood
supplier, but their name escapes me at the moment. They are literally
across the street from each other though. I suspect you could find both
of them using woodfinder.com with a little research. Make a road trip,
catch a Mariner's game and a mile down the road are the two hardwood
suppliers. Take SWMBO to dinner, spend the night and drive home the
next day. Everyone wins.

Mike -
For milling that walnut log, you might check with the people at wood
mizer... They have a referral service that *might* be able to direct you to
a wood mizer portable mill owner who can turn your log into lumber.
Can't help you on the maple, but the guy that owns the wood mizer might have
a lead or two...
My 2 cents worth...No affiliation, blah blah....

My nephew in Kennewick does a lot of woodwork. He must have some local

have a good supply of woods.

I agree, John. I have an email adress for a WoodMizer rep who was
very helpful. I'm not sure what the netiquette is regarding posting
someone else's email addy, but shoot me an email and I'll send it to
you. Or, you could go to
www.woodmizer.com
and hook up with them that way.
As far as a log five feet in diameter, most of the portable bandmills
I've seen only go to about 3 feet or so. It may have to be ripped
down to a more manageable size (with a huge freaking chainsaw or
something). The guy who cut up my cherry tree charged 30 cents/bf but
his invoice had a note on it saying that logs over 40" in diameter
would incur an extra charge.
At any rate, it would be well worth it, almost regardless of cost.
Even if you wind up spending 50 cents a bf and an additional $200 for
the extra work, you've still gotten a hell of a deal on a pantload of
black walnut.
My 2 cents.
