Veterans Day

The Veteran

You stood up; you showed up; you stepped forward.

You raised your right hand; you stood in the gap; you walked in the
fire.

You did not run; you did not hide; you did not dodge; you did not
evade.

Consequently...

You have nothing to prove, no one to convince.

Those who matter already know.

Those who don't, never will.

It was always my opinion that Vietnam served as a test lab for
military tactics. Winning was not the top priority.

Especially when we were lied to by leaders who have never been in
battle.

They totally fail to comprehend the consequences of their saber
rattling and go it alone attitude.

Well said. I don't do "support" ribbons nor bumper slogans, which some
people find odd. Did have my "proud parent of a US soldier" sticker on my
booth sign. Because I am proud of him. He volunteered, I was drafted.

Another recipient of personal greetings from LBJ.

Just go back from supper with enough Vets to fight a war. Guys from WWII,
Korea, Viet Nam, and other more recent conflicts, all food free courtesy of
Golden Corral Rest. Probably cost the local place close to $10,000 to serve
all of the vets that showed up. ($10 a meal x 1000 meals) I know there
were at least 300 in the rest. and two lines of about the same while I was
there and more lining up all the time. I think this show a little bit of
respect to the vets both active and inactive.

Damn, George, you're reading my mind again.. lol

Being drafted as I was and signing up for a career as our son did are truly
different motivations, but I guess we're feeling the same fear and pride as our
parents did for us "inductees"..

I served 8 years in an air refueling squadron. I just turned 70 and if our
country needs me I'm ready to go back in right now. They I'm too old and I
say BULL SHIT! I may not be able to grunt with the younger guys, but don't
tell me I can't at least work in supply or drive a truck. I worry a lot
about the lack of true patriotism in our country when it comes to respecting
the military folks.

I too was a recipient of a, "Greetings From The President", when Mr.
Johnson was in office.

I declined to accept his invitation.

I did not go to Canada and I did not claim to be gay, and I did not
claim to have a religious conviction that precluded my involvement in
that war. Neither did I claim to be lame from any of a hundred
possible ailments.

I just said that I wasn't going.

I said that I wasn't going because that war was just as wrong as this
war.

I suppose that I was fortunate to have turned 1-A when Mr. Johnson's
War was being turned over to Mr. Nixon - who, allegedly had, "A secret
plan to end the war".

Well, we can all look back now on the veracity of Mr. Nixon.

No one came to my house to drag me away to jail.

I got some angry letters from the draft board, informing me of my
potential status as a violator of federal law.

I wasn't "religious" enough to claim the status of a Conscientious
Objector.

I believe that the test was that you could not conceive of any
condition wherein you would contemplate the taking of a human life.

I could conceive plenty of those conditions.

I wasn't eligible.

I guess that I was lucky that the war was winding down.

They gave me a status of 1-Y which, to the best of my understanding,
meant that, if the Vietnamese landed in West Chester, Pennsylvania (my
home town) - I would be called up.

I was satisfied.

I have no disrespect for veterans. My cousin Michael served two tours
in Vietnam; my father served in the Pacific Theater during WWII and
earned a Silver Star, my grandfather served in WWI - and I have two
great great grandfathers that I know about that served in the War Of
Northern Aggression - one on each side.

The fucking Vietnam War was wrong

This fucking war is wrong.

I wish all veterans my best regards for doing what they thought was
best.

I have a ten year old boy that I will encourage to follow his own
thinking on whatever war happens to be current in his time.

If I have any influence over him when he gets to war age - I will
encourage him to choose carefully.

God Bless America.

God Bless Our Veterans.
