Re: Advice on finishing Cedar

Hi Wreckers,
First time post. Can anyone suggest the best finish for a jewellery box
made of Australian Cedar. This is a reclaimed wood project from an old
house and is a nicely patterned grain timber. I do not want to cover
the grain nor to change the colour of the wood too much by oiling or
waxing (tried a test piece and the wood yellowed badly).
Hope someone can help,
TIA
Rob

Dan,

Thanks for your reply, I hadn't heard of buffing bare wood with leather
before. I have some saddlemakers leather so will give it a try.
Thanks once again.

I got a bunch of 2x12 western red cedar and made some light valances out of
it. I was shocked at how pretty it was with sanding and some poly.

I used tung oil on Cedar that I trimed out in my family room. After the
first coat dried, I went over it with steel wool and then gave it another
coat of tung oil. It really makes the grain stand out - amazing what cedar
looks like when the roughness is planed out...

Actually, I have a drill press. Unfortuantely, it does me no good when I'm
trying to drill holes in the end of a board for example, as the drill press
can't take vertical pieces. The exact application I needed the jigs for
recently was for knock-down connectors. A Jig is much more accurate than a
drill press, can go where the drill press can't and doesn't involve me
trying to somehow support 6'x2' boards on a tiny little platform. Otherwise,
I use the press when I can. For example, the press is really useful in
making the jigs... :-)
