How do I build a sofa?

Are there any resources out there on how to construct an upholstered sofa?
How hard could it be? I'm looking for instructions on how to build the
frame.

Plenty of books on upholstery. The woodworking is trivial - most
fully-upholstered furniture is truly crude underneath. A halved joint
in unplaned 2x4 is about as complex as it gets.

Pretty easy. My first upholstered piece was recovering a two seater
sofa. I was about to throw it out, until I realised it was a sofa bed
and worth the trouble to rebuild.

Trickiest bit is finding a supplier for upholstery materials. Then
hide the staple gun and the air nailer and go to it in the completely
traditional style. Foam exists to light the fires of eternal fiery
toxic damnation under the butts of those heathens who use it. Don't do
it.

Thanks for advice. I guess my pondering building a sofa myself is that I
have a living space which requires a unique seating area. It's already a
custom job because there's no couch a la carte that I've found so far that
fits the space. I'm thinking it's going to be a built in. The upholstery is
the only part that is the unknown part, but I'm pretty talented so I'm
confident I can pull it off.

Thanks. Not exactly the style I want but the basic idea of how the frame is
built gives me something to go on. Parts are available on line at
Vandykes.com.

Doesn't have to be your sofa. Cruise the thrift sores for a cheeeeeap one, lug
it home and rip it open. A lesson in sofa making for...well, however lucky you
happen to be that day.

The problem with this idea is that you learn how to make a cheap sofa!

Another option is to take a class from the local community college. An
8 (or so) week class can have you bring in a piece of furniture and
reupholster it in class. Wife and I did our dining room chairs that
way. Based on what I learned
in the class, I might tackle your project, but I'd read up on
upholstery stitching and the layers of fabric and stuffing underneath;
that's where the differences between cheap, marginal, good, and
oh-my-god come into play.

Do it.

Take apart an old sofa and discover how simple the framing really is.
