Northern Tool and Equipment

It turns out that the large building being erected near work is a place
called Northern Tool and Equipment. Sounded like a fun place. I browsed
their web site, but didn't see anything really exciting. Just another BORG.
Anyone have one of these nearby? Whataya think?

They send out an interesting catalog. I have had good mail order service
from them.

Is that the one on 290 in Houston??? I bought quite a bit from them
years ago when they were Northern Hydraulics. Kinda like Harbor
Freight but maybe with slightly higher quality.

Last summer, they had the best price on Milwaukee Cordless Drills. I
have gotten a few other things from them as well, they are where I got my
oily rag container and my fastener storage system. They do, however have
some stuff that is probably of questionable quality. Their "Northern"
tractors bear a remarkable resemblance to a series of tractors exported by
the Chinese.

Their price on leather gloves is also really good -- I got a lifetime
supply a couple of years ago. I think the price was about $12 per dozen
pair.

=======================

I bought a Jet JWBS-12OS / 708901 12" Open Stand Band Saw with JWBS-12RF 12"
Rip Fence cheaper than I could find it anywhere else on Amazon.com's
Toolcrib back before Christmas. Shipping was free and only took about three
days to arrive after I ordered it. I saved over $100 from the next best
price I could find for it. It was only $359.98 for the combination.

Not exactly.

Lots of hydraulics (they were originally Northern Tool and
Hydraulics). Anything someone cutting logs/lumber would
want. Many small engine products (and the engines
themselves). Good selection of utility trailer
parts/equipment.

Reasonable prices. Never had a complaint with the quality.

At work we recently bought a new vice from Northern. It was a relatively
cheap one ($99) and no brand was listed in the catalog or web site. Turned
out to be a Wilton and a good value. Yes, that was a hefty box but it did
survive UPS.

Have had several nearby for years. Used to be called Northern
Hydraulics. Back then they had quality stuff. Now all/most of their
crap is disposable, made in China junk. Their tools are crap. I've
all but written them off, especially given the wonderful world of the
internet. Long live Amazon.com.

Wow. I'd probably not even consider mail ordering an anvil, although
I guess it's more likely to damage the UPS driver than get damaged.
I've always had excellent packing and shipping from Amazon.

There's one nearby here. They have some unusual items not found at a
typical do-it-yourself store. Perhaps more garden equipment, trailer
hookup stuff, welding supplies, electrical tools, painting supplies,
wheels of all sorts, bits and drills, and weird lawn ornaments. They
carry a few quality brand tools displayed behind glass displays.
Their catalog will have more stuff than the physical store, but it is
a fun store to browse once or twice a year. Not as well-equipped as a
co-op, but a farmer might find this store useful.

Agree on some.
But they do have a couple of things not found elsewhere. They are a giant
step up from Harbor Freight.

I once bought mail-order from them. They managed to pack an _anvil_
and some welding goggles into the same box, without even a packing
peanut.

Now a company this clueless wasn't likely to be able to sort this out,
but I phoned up to suggest that this wasn't the smartest idea, just to
try and avoid them repeating it for someone else. Their phone person
put the phone down on me, trying to imply that it was somehow my
fault.

So guess what, I don't buy anything from them any more.
