Smaller Tablesaw

Hi

I need information on where I may find a small table saw?

I am limited for space and the saw would only be used for small mostly model
making jobs. The maximum size materials I would be using would be ply or MDF
to a maximum of around ½" inch.

I would really be glad of any help I receive mainly as Christmas is coming
and my would be better spending my present money on a saw than another
jumper.

Thanks in advance S.T.

How about a bandsaw instead ? It's heavy, so needs its own space, but
it's tall rather than wide. It'll do any ripping you might want for
model making.

Although there are machines like the Proxxon, I'd tend to avoid them.
There are problems with tiny circular saws - you're doing a lot of
cutting near the top of the wheel, which is less safe than a big saw
where you can do it near the centre of the wheel, where the teeth move
near-vertically (there's less chance of the timber being thrown
forwards).

The main problem with saws like the TS200, for the light stuff you are
talking about, is that the fences are so so crappy. If you are doing one
cut over and over again, that is not a big problem; but if you are changing
it, it will be really obnoxious. They make small saws with good fences,
figure on at least $300, or whatever that is in pounds.

How big is "small"?

What about length and width?

There are decent small inexpensive "bench saws" - a table saw small
enough to sit on a bench or on a small stand. They can easily handle
thicker stock than you sp;ecify, and can do a very good job considering
their price (although you may need to spend nearly as much for a good
blade as you did for the saw.

Many people in this news.group will turn up their noses as such saws,
but they have the space/$$ for a much better saw - and probably need it.

I'm think of such saws as the Delta TS200 - Lowes has this saw with a
stand for $99. Add a good 10" blade ($50-100) and you have a good small
saw.

One source I know of is Micromark. Do a search for "table saw"
http://www.micromark.com/

Preac is another source you might consider.

If that's the Delta version of the Skil 3400, the other huge problem with
the saw for small work is that it's impossible for all but the most
inventive and dedicated to make a zero-clearance insert for the thing.

I've seen a small table saw for model makers. If I remember correctly it used
circ saw blades. Looked like a quality piece of machinery.
I'll try to find it and repost.

Ok, I found it. Check out Proxxon at Woodcraft (see link
http://tinyurl.com/wquu). They also make a small drill press and a micro
compound miter saw.
