I'm looking for a source for a few pieces of HONDURAS mahogany
crotch veneer. ( The customer is adamant.) Need to cover 4 panels,
roughly 15"x25",with consecutive sheets. The hardwood suppliers in
Austin seem only to be able to order 2x8 or 4x8 sheets of bookmatched
3-ply veneer at about $25 a square ft. There's an outfit, (Herzog, I
believe,) that sells 22 or so sheet flitches at a buck or two a ft. on
eBay, but only has African mahogany crotch veneer. Can anyone suggest
any other possible sources ? Steve

If you have the ability to resaw your own, there's a guy selling a nice
big chunk of lumber.

Sounds like a great opportunity to go out and buy a nice drum sander!

Point taken. I was fortunate that a brief window opened. Henceforth
I shall refer only to "Groinal mahogany veneer." Thanks to all who
replied. I'm surprised that the Honduran variety has all but
vanished from the market, but that seems to be the case.

Well, except for Sweitenia Microphylla and Mahagoni. 'Honduras' (what
which is what we're calling Sw. Macrophylla these days; used to be the
name for 'proper' mahogany, ie Cuban, ie Mahagoni) is just one of
several, and the only one that's more or less commercially traded -
although with CITES II listing, prices are gonna rise s'more...
(and the African varieties, either Khaya or Entadrophragma spp, are at
least in the same family, if not the same genus.)

Given the flood of offensive posts recently, and the interest in
filtering them out, it's probably not a good idea to use the word
"crotch" in a subject line...

If customer is adamant, who cares what the price is, they are going to
pay it?
At least mine do.

Constantine's...

Also, for prematched 15"x30" (expensive but pretty)...

I don't know if it is Honduras mahogany or not but a phone call to them
would tell you.

I think the place is called Just Veneer. They have a booth at the
Houston wood show and I got some nice veneer this year from them. I do
know they were out of San Antonio.

origin you can try here:

It may come to that. With the pre assembled sheets it would be kind
of a crap shoot as to how the patterns would work out. Then, when I saw
that African veneer I started thinking how nice it would be to have a
pile left over for future projects and save a few hundred too.
S
I thought of that, but would likely be working with little or no
extra material and with the wild grain I'ld expect a lot of tearout
sending it through the planer. Maybe with a fresh set of knives it
wouldn't be a problem.
