Just curious if anyone might know what happened to Jason Burr and his
wood-workers.com hosting site? He was hosting my site as well as lot's of
others and now it's all gone! Never any warning, nada, zip zilch.
Everything dissappeared within the last couple of days and if the url is
entered a page from go-daddy.com shows the domain parked "here" but no other
info available
If you might have any info at all I would sure appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Jon

There always seems to be a few ass holes who'll shit in the town
well.
I had my woodworking site on Jason's server and was most appreciative
of the FREE service he provided for me and a whole bunch of other
woodworkers.
Never got any e-mail requesting donations but would have been glad to
kick in for a good cause.
If he got fed up and closed his server down it's our loss. There was
some good stuff there.
Am moving the site I had on wood-workers.com over to my comcast
account.
For those interested - the url is
http://home.comcast.net/~charliebcz/
Most of it has come acrossed ok though there are still missing images
and a missing page or two - the new server doesn't like "&" and "!" in
file names.
For woodworking newbies with a new or new to them table saw, the
section on kickback might be worth checking out. If you understand
what can cause kickback and what you can do to lower the odds
you may actually use the info - and save yourself some grief.

Thanks, Am going to rework the navigation so The Shop doesn't take up
so much space on the all text index. That was the earliest section
built,
when I was in my "show off all my toys" phase of woodworking. Now the
focus is on documenting the process of making things with the hope
that
I, and perhaps others, will use the stuff that works and, more
importantly
the stuff that doesn't work - hence the OOPS! right at the top of the
index. And if I can get a visitor to say "Hey, if even he can do that
then I sure as hell can."...

I really should wait and get more info before I rant and rave.
Engage Brain BEFORE Opening Big Mouth.
If Jason has dropped the web hosting service he so kindly provided
FOR FREE, for whatever reason, I'm grateful for what he did.
Thanks Jason, where ever you are.

I think Jason was using Apache on his server for wood-workers.com
Never had problems with "&" and "!" before.
Now I'm having problems with Adobe GoLive. Initially uploaded
site now gives me an out of memory message when I try to
open the "site" file. It has to be open to ftp to comcasts
server.
So I imported that site into GoLive with a new site name.
Uploaded changes to comcast and that worked - the first
time. Now it looks, on my end, as if I successfuly upload
new pages, image files etc, but they don't show up when I
check my site and try getting to the new pages. All attempts
to get to them result in page not found.
Damn I hate moving my wwing site.
Thanks for the info. Will file away and try to read up
on things.

Your original webserver must have been broken and none conformant to
the RFC on uniform resource identifiers (I'd hazard a guess and say it
was a Microsoft product). Your new domain is hosted on a Netscape
webserver running on Solaris.
An ampersand (&) is a reserved character ie. you shouldn't use it in
filename to be served up as it indicates something else in a URI
(URL), see:
http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2396.html
Bang (!) isn't reserved but unix machines don't like `funny
characters' in filenames because unix shells interpret them to mean
something else. For instance the bang character (!) is a logical not.
You are best off just using [A-Z],[a-z],[0-9],[_-]
You'll also piss off unix users if you use funny characters. Should
they wish to save one of your pages to disk, they'll have to rename
them if they don't want to give their shell hiccups at a later date.

Understandable.
If I remember right, they man got the lathe and it was donated by someone
anonymously.
Jason did a good thing for many of us, perhaps he got tired of funding it?

Here's the info from a "whois" search on the domain. It appears he let the
domain name expire. I think there's a grace period where he can recover it
before anyone else is able to purchase it. If someone wants to contact him,

Charlie, That's a good site. I will be reading it more when I get back into
woodworking .
Did you read the google link, I was in error, he did not ask for donations,
per-se he asked if anyone had an old lathe laying around.
I had suggested taking up the collection, seeing as how he had provided the
web space.
It was from memory that I recalled people were unwilling to help.

I can never understand people like that. Someone wants to do something nice
and asks for donations. Sure, not everyone can donate. That's perfectly
understandable. But, why get mean spirited? I've been away from that site

I don't know the problem here as I don't use that software.

I think it's because you are uploading pictures/files with reserved
characters in their names which either the webserver refuses to serve
up or they're not being saved to disk when you upload them. eg: in:
http://home.comcast.net/~charliebcz/RightToolCabinet2.html
there are pics like:
1A_Mallet&Squares.jpg
2A_CopingSaw&Hammers.jpg
etc.
they are not appearing because they contain ampersands; rename them to
something like:
1A_Mallet_n_Squares.jpg
2A_CopingSaw_n_Hammers.jpg
you'll also have to change your html to reflect the changed names.
Similarly there's a directory called:
M&T
which you'll have to rename also.
I think if you rename them, change your html and upload them you
should be back in business.
>

Yeah. Looks like you've got a bit of work to do rather than having fun
out in your shop making sawdust.

OK. Best of luck with the move!
BTW, I like your work....what I can see of it ;)
