Does anyone know if I can get a replacement roller for the Veritas
honing jig. I've managed to put a flat spot on it while using it with
Jap waterstones. It was only about the 3rd time I'd used it and I don't
think the roller was sticking. Maybe I was inadvertantly braking it with
my hand or something. Anyway, I'd much rather replace the roller than
have to buy a whole new one.

All I got was the back of the card it came attached to. Figured it out

SWMBO said "that's really nice, make me one tomorrow. OK?"
I live about halfway between the LV stores in London and Burlington, I never
know which way to turn.

Oh man, it's gorgeous indeed! I don't like the gleam in SWMBO's eye though.
Appeasing SWMBO's desire will be very expensive and time consuming.
I think Robin has a mean streak.

Yeh, and then you take a newbie to the woodworking show and show him how
he can fill his garage with 20,000 USD worth of stuff. Then you bring
in a new catalog each day and toss it on his desk and show him all the
websites. Finally, you send him to the site to get an LV catalog. You
are evil, very, very evil.

So I remember the instructions stating to wash the roller off with
water and then oil it when done. My question is what kind of oil
should I use?

Hell, I didn't know I had the last LV catalog until I happened to be

LOL! I've done that. "No honey, this is the saw I bought last summer.

So far, not a problem. She thinks it's funny. She'll come home an throw
something at me. "You got some new tool porn."
She's not too worried about it because we're *broke*, and I have to do a lot
of window shopping.
> useful. (Can I interest you in a Crapsman block plane or 10?)
I could use a block plane, actually, if it's not a complete POS. Something
to tide me over until I can afford a Veritas. :)

I'm pretty lucky so far. I mostly write out my own honey-do list. I'm
tasked with certain things, like mowing, but I set my own schedule. I had
to do some painting last year, but she hasn't really nagged me about
anything since.
For SWMBO's part, about all she ever asks me to do on a regular basis is
carry the laundry basket into the bedroom after she's washed and folded the
laundry. That and carry in all the groceries and stuff after she's done
all of the shopping. I don't even have to take out the trash anymore now
that our son is old enough to need some chores.
She's even authorized my getting a contractor's saw this year. Especially
if I can find something for $500 or less that will shut me up for a few
years. That's on the cheap side, but I think I can do it. Anything has to
be better than this Skil 3400.
> Enjoy!
I do. For all my bitching, she and I get along better than any "young
couple" I know. A few days from now will mark 10 years of marriage, and I
guess about 13 together.
I met her in Latin class of all places. All those years of French for
nothing. :)
(My grandparents get along better than any couple I know. They've been
married just under 70 years now.)

Mike,
It starts out innocent like that. SWMBO fails to realize that you have "the gene".
She's supportive and generous.
Over time she starts to wonder about the cost of your "toys". Yeah, you've made some
"respectable" pieces for the house. (The early efforts gradually work their way back to
the shop for wood repurposing or to the fireplace, so there is little material waste.)
The thousands of dollars you'll spend feeding your wood addiction start to grow like a
little ball in SWMBO's stomach. At first there are only casual comments and questions.
Statements start appearing while your visiting inlaws and friends. Statements like "... he
already has every tool known to man...", will become common.
Unless you don't care what she's saying or thinking, the time comes quickly where
your sneaking the ROS into the "shop", the packaging already removed at the store.
The Lie Nielsen's and Lee Valley shipments are coming to your brother or carefully planned
to arrive during a week off. She'll find them, but she'll never be exactly sure they
wern't
in the shop before.
The new catalogs will arrive. She'll see you looking at them. You may not notice right
away,
but eventually you'll feel the burning laser beam stare coming from her direction.
Enjoy these early times. Those of us farther down the addiction road still get lucky now
and again
around father's day, birthday's or Xmas. It's an easy target for a gift. Sometimes these
gifts are actually
useful. (Can I interest you in a Crapsman block plane or 10?)
I am very lucky too. My SWMBO has chosen to ignore most of what happens in the shop.
She likes most of the projects, but the honey-do list grows much faster than I address and
in different directions than I like. Those sideways glares and double takes are all but
gone now that I
get most of my tool porn at the post office.
Enjoy!
Myx
The flip side of this is if she gets interested in the basement
refuge. While it makes it easier to buy tools, it also makes it harder
to get time on them.
I introduced my fiance to my scroll saw and sander over the Xmas
holiday. From wondering why I spent so much time down there, it was
hard to pull her out of the place. I'll have a lot of tools, but I
think I'll have to start hanging out (hiding) in the upstairs library.

I should have been a little more clear. They only have stores in Canada,
but they do do mail order to the US, and from what I've read it's quite
quick. I've never dealt with their mail order dept, since I live less

I managed to do exactly the same thing. I think I should have put a
bit of oil inside the roller early, perhaps LV uses graphite and it
doesn't quite make it.
LV sent me a new roller, and it was easy to install. I removed the
snap ring, but I don't think I needed too. Just get your allen wrench
and loosen the brass knob on the shaft, then it will come off. then
you can loosen the other set screw on the spacer and the shaft will
come off allowing the roller to be replaced. Took about 8 minutes.

The manual that comes with the jig says all parts are replaceable, and
may be ordered directly from the manufacturer. The roller part number
is 05X07.03.
