It's happened to mine twice now. My neighbor had the same machine and the
same problem. It seems like a design defect. It is most definitely a
maintenance item if you plan to use it frequently. My ultimate solution is
to buy a better planer soon.

If you go to the WW group on Goggle and do a search you will find this
was a big problem a while ago which eventually caused several planers to
self destruct. JG

this is an issue with the earlier models, mine had that problem right
after I bought it about 5 years ago. This is the main drive gear, it
works loose. if I recall correctly, the nut holding the gear might
have a reverse thread, but I am not certain of this (I recently sold
the planer due to upgrade). Simple fix, take off the side panel,
remove the gear nut, get some Loktite or other brand at the auto parts
store, douche it, put the nut back on, note its a bitch to tighten
fully as the cutterhead spins. I first tried a lock washer, but that
was not effective. Loktite worked like a charm. Check it every 3
months or so and repeat as needed.

It was eons ago, in usenet years. I was one of the posters to a few
of those threads. I think it was the late 1990's.
The planer wouldn't "self destruct," but the plastic shroud covering
the belt would be destroyed and the belt, too (he says from experience).

Blue loctite (sp?) cured the problem for me.
