How is Tools Plus for doing Business with. I haven't bought anything from
them since I lived in Chesire 10 years ago. I am going to pick up the DJ20
Jointer from them tomorrow. They have an excellent price of $1099 which the
Delta rep said was below cost. Buyer Beware?? Coastal has it for $1375 with
a mobil base and extra set of knives.

I'd appreciate any comments

Rich

No, I always either don't need anything at the time of the sale, or
have some schedule conflict.

We'll see... With any luck, things will get settled soon. Strikes
suck from both sides of the ball.

Really? That's strange. Every stammer in the world manages to send

I again point you to the $1299 Amazon price, with free shipping. The
Delta rep says dealer cost for the tool is $1100+. I find it hard to
believe that Amazon would handle that tool for that small of a gross
margin.

Now, lets look at Coastal. Using a typical retail markup to figure
Coastal's costs on the extras, removing the mobile base and knives
would bring their in-store price to about $1260 ($1349-$90). I again
find it hard to believe that a brick and mortar retail store would
sell that tool for a $160 gross profit or less. Why would Coastal
GIVE away the base and knives, for a gain of $160, GROSS?

Check out the Jet 6" Jointer that Coastal sells for $439, Amazon and
others sell it for $549-599. Do you think that's below Coastal's
cost, or do you think there's a slightly better margin than the Delta
rep hints at?

I don't believe the Delta rep, and being in the bicycle business have
no idea why this person would ever mention pricing to a retail
customer. Maybe different Delta reps have different territories?
Except for real estate and cars, nearly any retail business has
similar fixed costs, and has to operate at similar margins in order
for it to be worthwhile to stay in business.

They don't. I like the "Depot Shoppers" sign in front of TP. <G>

I'd not hesitate to buy again from either store, and usually do so on
a regular basis.

I didn't know TP had the DJ-20 for that price, now I want to buy one
as well!

The Delta rep said it wasn't one of their promotions. CT is just bundling
and TP is below cost. Too good to be true ?

I wonder if they do what those Big Apple Electronics stores are famous for.
Stripping out computer components and swapping in cheaper stuff? Swap out
the motor? How can they do it? Make it somewhere else. I noticed some of
the prices of TP other stuff is more expensive than CT. Also, Amazon does
the same thing. It will have higher prices for certain items thean others. I
don't find them all that competitive in pricing.

Speaking of the Borg. I was there this afternoon and their tool selection
really sucks.. Mostly Dewalt, Rigid, very little Makita, P&C. Not what it
use to be like. I don't think CT or TP will have any serious competition.

Hey Barry:

I'm glad that you got in on the DJ-20 deal. It was too good to be true
kinda deal. That is why I PING'd ya. I knoew you had done biz with them. I
had given the Grizzly route some consideration as well. My Brother-in-law
has some older stuff and it is not that bad. According to him that is. I
have been considering the Gizzly Tent sale
http://www.grizzly.com/TentSale/tentpa.cfm?

Have you ever gone?

I assume you work for a company formerly called SNET?? It looks like
they're not going to strike for now.

So how long did you have it in for a new Jointer? Was it one of those
impulse buys? You gotta love the Price ! Gloat. When I spoke to Bob on
Wednesday he had 2 left and you got one and I got the other.

Now on to the next item on my list

http://www.woodpeck.com/lssupersystem.html

and I am still on the fence regarding the bandsaw. MM16 or X5 17.

Decisions...decisions...

I picked up DJ20 this morning and his twin brother was sitting right next to
him awaiting adoption tomorrow. Bob had told me the adoption papers came
through $300 below cost.

A long time. I've been looking for a used DJ-20, and had been

A DJ-20 for $1099 sealed the deal! I can get an 8" Grizz for $800,
plus the time and expense of an 8 hour round trip ride to Muncie. The
DJ-20 is a known quantity, I've used them and I like them. I think
it's a the perfect smaller-shop jointer. Having used a DJ-30 and a
DJ-20 at CSW, I actually prefer the 20 for most operations, as the
tall fence on the 30 gets in my way.

FWIW, when I called this morning, if there was one left, it was yours.
I still would have reserved it, but you'd have the first shot at it,
as you found the price first.

Now if only the SBC/CWA contract gets settled, I won't have to work 16
hour days, and can go get it. <G>

It's right there on the website. Since it dosen't include the mobile
base and knives, maybe it's older stock?

Amazon sells it for $1299, with free shipping. Guestimating that
Amazon will pay about $50 to ship it, I don't believe for a minute
that tool dealers make less than $150 on one of these. With that
margin, why sell machine tools?

I'm kind of doubting the rep's story.

I meant older, older, not the X5.

I'm thinking TP may strip the knives and mobile base from the package
Coastal sells and sell them alone. Nothing wrong with that, if you
don't want the extras.

I don't sell tools, but I do have some inside retail information and I
doubt any tool dealer is willing to make the same amount of money on a
DJ-20 as he is with a good variable speed router. There are general
minimum margins on all retail operations to cover fixed costs, it
doesn't matter what you're selling.

I've been told by one dealer's employee (not Coastal or TP) that he
makes 10% on an $899 machine, and then found the same machine for an
everyday price of $825 right down the street, and BORGs aren't
involved. I don't think ANYONE retailing an $825 tool with a gross
profit of $15.90 will be around long.

I knew you purchased your 650 from them and I had always thought of them as
a reputable store and they haven't gone out of business since the Borg moved
in next door. I was going to get the dj20 at Coastal Tools but $100 is $100
and it will cover half the price of the 12v Makita impact driver I have been
waiting for on backorder.

> It's right there on the website. Since it dosen't include the mobile

I figured I would save $100 when all is totaled up because I want the Mobil
Base and the Knives. It is the older DJ20 that I want because the motor and
base are US made. The new X5 is completely made overseas.

Thanks for the input

Rich
