The timing is very good. I just made up 38 mushrooms from some spalted
birch limbs. The tree had spalted while standing (apparently the result
of a bad pruning job) and then blown over by breaking near the entry
point. I cut the tree up for the owner (a gloat I posted a year or so
ago) in exchange for the wood. These 'shrooms are just the first pieces
to go on the lathe. I think that there are 3-4 sets of candlesticks on
my shelf, too.
This leads me to a question ...
I have begun the finishing process by dunking them in 50/50 tung/mineral
spirits overnight. They took on enough liquid to sink. The wife says she
thinks they'd look best with a somewhat shiny finish. What I have in
mind is to let them dry for a month or two, then hit them with a wipe of
straight tung oil. When that dries I plan to follow up with a couple
layers of wiping poly and then buff up with the Beel 3-on wheels.
I want to end up with a satin finish on the cap of the mushroom but
nothing in particular on the stem & base. Does this finishing protocol
sound reasonable to you guys / gals? Or is there a more direct way to
get to where I want to go? Or am I headed in the wrong direction entirely?
