Latest Troll stuff got through my nfilter

Hello,

Some help please :)

I installed news proxy yesterday hoping to eliminate the Troll crap we've
been seeing lately. I set it up to point to my news server, I pointed my
news client to news proxy (127.0.0.1), I copied Doug Miller's nfilter.dat
file (I can see it when I choose Edit->Filters. Under configuration I've
enabled regular expressions, but when I got my new headers this morning the
troll bomb got through just fine. Anything I might be missing?

All help appreciated,
Mike

I adhere to the KISS method. (Keep It Simple Stupid) as that applies to me
quite appropriately. When one of those subject lines appears (either from
an original poster or some idiot who 'replies' to it thereby causing its
reappearance, I highlight it, click on 'message', click on 'block sender',
click as necessary to complete the process. I get visceral satisfaction
from this process. The only downside is that after very few of these
exercises, the posts seem to virtually disappear. Alas, there goes that
visceral satisfaction. As for the 'idiots who manage to cause a
reappearance of the offending posts by 'responding', there are many posters
here who post lots of good stuff, so that if any of the 'idiots' were
otherwise valuable contributors, so be it. There's still plenty of good
stuff here without their contributions. If you expect to come up with some
magic filter which will eliminate all that is objectionable, rotsaruck.

Just my 2 cents worth. (probably even less)

I can not figure out why everone is having so much trouble! I just use
simple old Outlook Express, and have filtered out a few nasty words. I
rarely see anything!

I have this line in my filter file and I never saw a one of the
s p a c e d subject posts. It catches all words of 4 or more
characters with any number of intervening spaces.

rec.woodworking drop subject:.*[A-Za-z] *[A-Za-z] *[A-Za-z] *[A-Za-z].*

First, you need a copy of the Nfilter filtering program. It's no longer
supported by its author, but you can get a copy from my web site:
http://www.milmac.com/np-120.exe

Install that. Then send email to filterinfo /at/ milmac /dot/ com and the
email autoresponder will reply with a copy of my filter file. Replace the file
nfilter.dat with what the autoresponder sends you.

Did you notice that most of the same words were in the "from" column, block

The troll changed his subject lines a bit: instead of "DIRTYWORD" he started
using "D I R T Y W O R D". I updated the filters about 7 hours ago,
immediately after seeing the first one get through. So talk to the
autoresponder again... The filters now catch both versions.

BTW, he could have used tabs. He could also use a varying number of
spaces and/or tabs. If you use NewsProxy (nfilter), lines like this will
take care of all his options:

rec.woodworking Drop subject:.*[Ss][ /t]*[Hh][ /t]*[Ii][ /t]*[Tt].*

This filters any message with a subject that contains the objectionable
word with any amount of interspersed white space (including none).

For example, to avoid posts with YUCK in the subject, use this:

rec.woodworking Drop subject:.*[Yy][ /t]*[Uu][ /t]*[Cc][ /t]*[Kk].*

This line filters any message with a subject that contains the
objectionable word with any amount of interspersed white space (including
none). Of course, you'll need additional similar lines in your filter
file, one for each different objectionable word.

As Robert Bonomi pointed out, this line should read:

rec.woodworking Drop subject:.*[Yy][ \t]*[Uu][ \t]*[Cc][ \t]*[Kk].*

This also requires that regular expressions be enabled. To do this, go to
Edit-Configuration, and check the "Enable regular expressions" box on the
General tab.

Because in the Regular Expression

The asterisk indicates a series of zero-or-more. Of course, with the
case of zero you are left with any post with a subject line with at
least four consecutive letters ... :-)

If the regular expression engine supports it, you might try plus (+)
instead of asterisk in the regex. Plus means to match one-or-more.

Free Agent has no filtering capabilities:

However, there are other free newsreaders that do have excellent filtering.

The source is nym.alias.net -- an anonymous mail to news remailer service.
The administrators for that service don't care about spam/abuse reports, so
there really isn't any way to "shut off" the posts at the source. You need
to use a newsreader client with good filtering capabilities, and then just
filter out any and all posts with nym.alias.net in the Path header.

Good eye, I didn't catch that, I deleted it so fast.

He's probably just downloading the regex himself and changing his text to
suit his needs. Whatever, delete still works for me.

Well, I screwed up again. My testing of the filter line posted earlier
was faulty and that line will result in most posts being dropped. I
can't figure out why it does this. Can anyone who is a better
programmer enlighten me?

My original one DOES work, but only with single imbedded spaces.
rec.woodworking drop subject:.*[A-Za-z] [A-Za-z] [A-Za-z] [A-Za-z].*

Sorry if this caused anyone a bunch of grief.

Thanks Charles. It's obvious now that you pointed it out.

Same here. Don't know what the big deal is.

It sure would.
But you may not like how many false positives it blocks.

I suppose if you wanted to be really aggressive you could use:

rec.woodworking drop subject:.*

That aught to catch every single troll out there ;)

You may have missed the subsequent post stating that that line
doesn't work.

This is the fixed line for single spaces between letters:
rec.woodworking drop subject:.*[A-Za-z] +[A-Za-z] +[A-Za-z] +[A-Za-z].*

And this one catches words of 4 or more letters with any
number of intervening non-alpha characters:
rec.woodworking Drop subject:.*([A-Za-z][^A-Za-z]+){3,}[A-Za-z].*

Neither of the above will trigger on "wood" or "drill".
Both will trap "w o o d" or "w o o d"
The second will trap "w.o.o.d" or "w.o..o...d" or "w-o+o*d" etc.
