Mozilla is a windows-based browser. There are some pages that have
problems, but for the most part, it gives you a lot more control over
things, like turning off pop-ups. It can be downloaded from
<www.mozilla.org>

Not sure you even have to be that jaded. Most on-topic posts dealing
with something like, "How do you do x ... " are typically answered
within one or two return postings. Some of the things that result in
long-drawn out on-topic threads are things like, "What is the best ...
" or "What's the best way to ...", the kinds of questions for which the
answers are very subjective and everybody with (and sometimes without) a
dog in the fight has an opinion. Most of the off-topic postings are
those for which opinions are going to be expressed and that does elicit
long, drawn out threads.

If you're not using Microsloth's Internet Explorer, you may have
problems. I couldn't see anything with Mozilla, but I also had pop-ups
turned off, so that might have caused issues. I just launched explorer
instead and was able to view the page.

Actually the way it works is, ask "any" on topic question
and the first half dozen responses will/may come back as
being on topic. After that it's a bunch of dorks pissing

Welcome to USENET. I've always thought it would be a good idea if threads
would just self-destruct after either two weeks or 50 posts. I find that
after either has passed, whether the original post was on-topic or not, no
useful information is being transacted anyway.

That is all too true Keith.

At least this has illustrated the pitfalls of replying to trolls, OT posts,

BAD has changed his email addy a few times. The MS tracking filters use the
email addy, not the alias, to track usage.

A Google count has, between 01 Jan 2003 and 31 Dec 2003 inclusive:

1. BAD - 3640 posts, (avg 303 per month)
(Search done on nickname Bay Area Dave; BAD used [email protected] and
[email protected] in the period)

2. JOAT (including T.) - 3100 posts (avg 258 per month)
(search done on email addy, not nickname, to filter trolls who stole his
identity)

3. Leon - 2820 posts (avg 235 per month), (includes all Leon's posting)

But then, who's counting...

I think I really need to go back to work tomorrow.

cheers,

Greg

I consider just about any thread asking about magazines to be
equivalent to a troll, so just hit ignore on those too. I'm pretty
ruthless and try to keep it trimmed down. Takes me 10 to 30 min. each
day to read and respond to what interests me on this group. I skim
topics and only retrieve bodies for those that seem interesting. When
I look in my newsreader right now I see about 95% on-topic posts.

If you think about it, that makes sense. Most of the threads are so
specific in nature, that there are fewer people with an interest in
the topic. Start a religious, sport or political topic and lots of
readers will respond. A moderated group would throw out the OT posts,
but lengthen the time to get useful responses.

Probably because it's a Microsoft-hosted site and I'm using a Linux web
