There are a lot of suitable woods. "The best" is probably what you can get
cheaply and easily. Good woods are:
basswood
lime (or linden)
cedar
mahogany
poplar
pecan

Yes, haven't tried Osage Orange, but Live oak helps keep your sharpening
skills in shape.
