WIND CHIMES

http://www1.iwvisp.com/cllsj/windchimes/ Yah, wood used. Personally, I
find wind chimes pretty grating on the nerves, after the first two
minutes. But, you can always make some and give them to that neighbor
you can't stand. Drive him/her nuts. Heh heh.

If you're offered free wood, take it, period; figure out what to use it
for later.

J T -
A question, if you please.

I've seen this {or it's predecessor} before . . . maybe from you. The 'wood
used' comment is what attracts me, but it turns out to be only for the
'hammer' piece.

A Xylophone {or the hand-carried Glockenspiel} is made from metal bars /
strips struck with a wooden mallet . . . similar to these wind chimes.
However, I KNOW there is an instrument called a Marimba {spl?} that is a
series of WOOD bars or strips, also played by striking with a wood 'mallet'.

Have you 'run across' an article, or ever made a wind chime FROM wood? I
imagine a set of nicely polished, dark {like Mahogany, etc}wooden rods would
be a nice counterpoint to a Bronze ships bell.

Nope. Metal =3D metallophone. Wood =3D xylophone.

Have you 'run across' an article,

For what, marimba?
Pretty sure there's at least one in the archives.

Or, wood wind chimes?
Dunno.

or ever made a wind chime FROM wood?

Nobody's ever irritated me enough, yet, to make a wind chime, and
then to give it to them. If, I say IF, I was to make something like
that, I might use bamboo.

I imagine a set of nicely polished, dark {like Mahogany, etc}wooden rods
would be a nice counterpoint to a Bronze ships bell.

If they're gonna be worked by the wind, I'd say no If you just
want them, to smack with a mallet once in awhile, I'd say 2X4, cut to
length, would work.

However, if I really, really, really, wanted some wind chimes, I'd
like to get some very empty welding tanks, cut them off diffenent
lengths, and make a set of man's wind chimes. I've never heard wind
chimes from them, but I've heard gongs made from them. Very cool. The
sound carries nicely, nice deep tones. Of course, they'd probably only
chime in high winds, but that'd be fine. Something like that should
scare the Hell out of the neighbors.

Has anyone seen the website for the Loud Hot Pipe Organ lately ?
Used to be at www.lhpo.org

It was a pyro-organ, made from gas cylinders and powered by burning
propane. You could hire it for special appearances and they had a
wonderfully detailed list of what they needed on site and their
"rider". 'Couple of tons of propane, gaffer tape and some decent
coffee' was the gist of it.

As pay back I'm thinking about using old welding tanks in the 100 cubic foot
range.

About the time an arrangement like that chimes in the wind . . . it wouldn't
only be the neighbors who would be scared.

Kinda a semi-automatic tornado alert. Never have to worry about
false alarms. LMAO

Reminds me of when Charlie Alnutt made torpedoes from welding tanks, TNT, &
a couple of nails.

Interestingly, the Queen was an iron boat. Only burned wood. Also
had an auxillary engine, 'cause it wasn't fast enough for the movie
people. Good movie, I've got a copy.

I was thinking, on a boat, maybe a more appropriate wind chime
would be 2 or 3 pirates strung up from the yardarm. Was gonna post a
picture, but decided not. Figured someone might take it as inspiration,
and do it.
